Film Clip evaluation

My chosen Genre was Horror and therefore there were certain things I had to think about in order to make it fit within the Horror genre. Mainly there was a storyline to think about, because without a decent storyline it wasn’t going to turn out very good. Being a horror it had to be scary, frightening, and spooky, and that was what I wanted to make, as one of my favourite genres is horror. I decided on a story involving the Grim Reaper. Every horror film I have watched had a death, if not lots of deaths in it, so I had to include one really, in order for it to fit with other horrors. As the Grim Reaper only apparently appears after a death it seemed to fit well with somebody being killed, and it would then add in the horror part to the story.

I did a quite a lot of adapting to my plans in order to get a final idea for a story line for my clip. At first my original plans were to go along the lines of a Scream type story. I got my inspiration from the scream story but I didn’t want to copy it. Firstly I envisioned a guy alone in a large empty house in the middle of nowhere with his dog. He hears noises in the garden, he goes round the back flashing his torch on to the garden. As he does so he notices something in the far corner, so he shines the torch up to the corner `and hanging from the tree is a body. He turns to his right and from the bushes runs a dark figure holding a weapon.

This had to be changed because, firstly, I couldn’t make it look like someone was hanging in a tree. Secondly, I realized how hard it would be to make a dog sit still, especially during filming. I realized that there was a swimming pool at the place I was filming and so decided to do a murder in the pool. I kept the hooded figure outside and had the swimmer in the pool and also had the killer in the house in a different room. When I filmed I didn’t have blood in the pool as it was not my pool and it was impossible for me to contaminate their pool.

My audience thought that my particular role was undertaken quite well I didn’t actually get any really negative feedback about the editing. Some said that my clips I cut could have been faster to add more suspense. I agree some of my clips could have been a bit faster as some were quite long, and I suppose they were right as it would of added more suspense to the clip.

My own views on my role that I chose are varied, I thought I performed the role quite well, but I don’t think I got as much out of it as I would have liked. I think, if my filming had have been slightly better and possibly more thought out, about shots and so on, there would have been an opportunity for a better editing job. With what I had, I think I did ok. I tried to get as many cuts in it as possible, and tried to get some different shot types through zooming in on clips in final cut and so on. There were bits that were tricky to do anything with such as, when the camera tracks up to the grim reaper standing above the pool. I didn’t keep the camera rolling long enough and didn't zoom in enough as I would have liked to. So I wasn't really happy with this clip. I also noticed a small flicker in the middle of the clip and I could not get rid of it. Eventually I completely took out this clip because I didnt like it.

One of the clips that were way too long, was when the camera moves around to see the pool after the actor has entered the changing room. I didn't want to cut it down because it was a needed shot. However I did feel unhappy with the fact that I forgot about the speed changer of the clip. I could have sped the clip up and so I would not have to worry about cutting it down.

This clip, I was actually pleased with the editing. I liked the way I cut from him about to turn the light on, to him turning the lights on. Also I liked the way the actor walks in the door and then I cut it to him walking on from the door.
